The date of the establishment of this empire is usually given as the 11th century AD, though a night century date is more convincing as shall be seen shortly. At its peak, the territory of the empire extended to chad ,Niger Republic and Cameroon. The empire could also muster of an army of 100,000 Calvary and 120,000 infantry.  The history of the empire is usually divided into two phases: the first phase from the 11th century to the 14th century when the capital of the empire was at Njimi ( kanem), east of lake Chad. The second phase was between the 15th to the 19th century when the capital was moved to Ngarzagamu ( Borno), west of Lake Chad. These two faces could also be referred to respectively as the Kanem and Borno phase, hence, the name Kanem Borno.
